We have all arrived safely home from Canada and have enjoyed our time back in the states (hence the late writing of this last post). We started off yesterday (3/7) with heartfelt good-byes at Sherman House. The members and assistants were so kind to us throughout the week and we appreciated every bit of it. We set off for home and stopped at the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, which was exciting as most of group had never been to the Falls before. We took lots of pictures and enjoyed the view of America, which we had missed. The group shopped until they dropped at the souvenir store, too.

Then, we stopped in Buffalo for poutine, as we heard it was a Canadian favorite and had not yet had the chance to get it while over there. We found a place called Poutine and Cream, which had delicious burgers, poutine, and crazy milkshakes. As a group, we tried traditional poutine (French fries with gravy and cheese cords over top it), general Tao chicken over poutine, and BBQ pulled pork over poutine. We were stuffed with food and happiness as we headed home.
Overall, our group meshed greatly and shared many wonderful moments throughout the week. The dynamic as a whole could not have been better and we appreciate all of the assistance from our two facilitators, Brent and Megan. The week truly was beautiful and will be cherished forever.

Day 6: Wrap-Up Tour

Today was our last full day in Hamilton, and we took the
opportunity to reflect on what we had done thus far on our ABST and explore the
area a little more before saying goodbye. We started the morning with another
voyage (through a miniature blizzard) to Vintage Coffee. Upon our return, we
embraced our inner children and built a snowman in front of the Sherman house.
After, we met Karen at the Day Program to talk about our experience and what we
learned. Each of us shared two highlights from the week, which led to many
laughs and smiles as we all recounted our interactions with different members
of the L’Arche community who drew close to our hearts this week.

Next, Karen took us to Café 541, a non-profit restaurant
that specializes in serving deliciously-prepared, local and nutritious foods at
reasonable prices. The restaurant was intentionally positioned downtown in what
was once considered a food desert. Many who you will see in the café are
volunteers. Patrons have the opportunity while ordering, to purchase buttons
for $1 each, which can be used by other customers to subsidize the cost of
their meals. One of our Hamilton core members, Janice, volunteers there, and
told us a lot about the organization. The food was amazing and suited all our
dietary needs, including gluten free and meatless Fridays for Lent!

From there, we drove along the Escarpment to Dundas where we
visited a scenic overlook, and had an impromptu snowball fight. Dundas is home
to many waterfalls, and we took a little hike to see one of the larger ones.
Dundas is also filmed often for American cinema, and we past many scenes from
the Netflix show Good Witch, which Jordan highly recommends. J We also stopped in
downtown Dundas and visited a local specialty cheese shop, eco-friendly refill
store, and artisan bakery.
L’Arche Office, we explored Downtown Hamilton on James Street, purchasing knick
knacks and locally-sourced goods. While the girls enjoyed the downtown shops
and supported the local economy with highly sought-after American currency, the
accompaniers enjoyed “a portion of what I am able to eat” all-you-can-eat sushi,
an hour and a half before our in-home dinners. Which Brent would like to point
out, he successfully finished with no problems (and it was good).
Then, it was back in the van to the Sherman house before
going to our respective homes for one last dinner and goodbye with our favorite
core members. Our visit was quick as we prepared to decorate cupcakes with the
community at the Day Program center with all of our Hamilton homes and friends.
The event was a major success, with Jordan being declared the official winner
(by Megan and Brent as of writing this blog) for her fondant dog creation.
After cleanup, we all came home for a particularly special reflection of our
entire experience. What a week!
After getting to a cute diner called "Three Coins," we all soon realized it was well worth it. We then arrived at today's destination: Daybreak, to get a small tour and history lesson of the area learning that before renovations, it used to be entirely surrounded by farmland. We learned fun facts such as the old barn that was used back in the day is still standing and being utilized today for different programs. We saw incredible architecture beside a welcoming and warm, smile filled environment. Our group was split up to do various tasks soon after arrival. One group had the opportunity to clean out an area for Daybreak and found two exciting hidden treasures while doing so.

(Flaggs from L'Arche Daybreak 25th anniversary)
This was lovely as Daybreak just celebrated its 50th anniversary recently. They also got to bake and eat delicious cookies while spending time with some core members.
<strike></strike>
(Pictured here is Lynda a core member)
Our second group had a bit of a different experience. Jordan, Brent, and Carrie had the opportunity to do some art by painting with some very talented core members. Our focus was on abstract self-portraits that will be entered into an upcoming art show. We then ate lunch and finished up with an 8-minute much-needed meditation where the focus was on the body, anywhere from how your feet are placed on the floor to focusing on your heartbeat.
<strike></strike>
(Lunch at the art center)
Our small group then got split off with Brent and Carrie heading to bowling with a core member named Luigi who had the most contagious smile I think I've ever seen. I (Jordan) got the chance to do some baking with the head of the art center, Fran. We followed her own personal recipe for some delicious blueberry muffins that permeated the building with a mouth-watering smell.
We then headed back to our home for the week (Sherman house). When we got back, David was watching his "all-time favorite show," which happens to be one of my old favorites as well. "Dukes of Hazzard" the episode we watched like many of the others, Bo and Luke Duke were getting in trouble with Boss Hog.
Lastly, for a long yet beautiful day, we dispersed to our Hamilton homes for dinner. I personally headed to the Cornerstone house with my partners "princess Ariel" and Meghan. We had an amazing dinner cooked by a core member who is very special in my heart. Michael did an excellent job making us his favorite meal to cook; mashed potatoes and drumsticks, which he learned in his weekly cooking classes. We ended the night at our house in true Cornerstone fashion by watching WWE wrestling with Michael.
To combat our exhaustion, we woke up for an early walk to a local coffee shop, Vintage. To our surprise, we discovered that the shops sells products made from the local L'Arche members. After coffee, we headed to Hamilton's day program.
The program is very relaxed and provides a space where L'Arche core members can socialize and do different activities. They have everything from beads for jewelry making to materials to hand-craft candles. A majority of the crafts that members make are for sale in a small store in the building.

At program today, I spent a lot of time making bracelets and coloring with various core members. It was a nice activity to do to simply be present with the people I was with. It allowed me to center myself and find calm within our busy week. On the other hand, some of us had a hectic morning baking cupcakes with some of the core members. From what I heard, this was a fun but crazy and tiring experience. Make sure to come back to our page on Friday to hear more about what these cupcakes are for!

During the last hour day program, a beloved man named Paul came in for a music therapy session. This was a beautiful hour where we all experienced the joyful singing of each Hamilton core member. It showed the strength and bonds within the community and allowed us to connect with the members in a new way.

Another fun part of the day was the birthday of the core member, Laurence. She is a spunky 78 year-old woman who is full of laughter and life. As she does every day, Laurence had a unique outfit with lots of bling! Today, it was a larger than life necktie reading "Happy Birthday!" We all wished her happy birthday, and Meghan, Ariel, and Jordan had the opportunity to celebrate with Laurence and her house members at dinner.

After day program, we all made our way to the Cornerstone house for worship. This was a beautiful experience that truly brings the community together. We were all very touched by the words of each and every core member that day. What was impactful for me and other members was seeing how much the community at L'Arche cares for its members, even the ones who have past. During each worship service, they honor them and lift them up in prayer. I thought this was powerful because it shows that no one is ever forgotten.
After worship, we went to our separate houses for dinner. I was excited for dinner today because I got to meet a new core member. One of the members of the house had been out of town and returned today. It was nice to meet her and see how everyone in the house interacted and connected with one another. I am in a house that focuses on more independent living than the other houses. It has been interesting to be in this house because these ladies do not have an assistant that lives with them. They do almost everything on their own and are perfect matches for each other. Watching each of the house members interact has shown me how intentional placements within L'Arche are. These ladies fit together like pieces of a pie, and it is beautiful.

As day 4 comes to a close, I bid you goodnight from Carrie and the rest of the L'Arche Ontario team!L'Arche Ontario ABSThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04955365721864668519noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428078648981038681.post-11053052413736424242020-03-03T20:15:00.001-08:002020-03-03T20:16:18.879-08:00Day 3We started day three by heading over to the Welcome Inn Community Center. It was about a 10-minute drive from the Sherman house. On the way to the Center, we noticed how beautiful the neighborhood was. We were curious about the cost of the homes, so I downloaded Zillow and found out one of the cheaper houses was around $360,000! We were all surprised how expensive the houses were, especially compared to Erie's housing market.

When we got to the Community Center, we were welcomed and given a brief description of what the Center did. On Tuesday, they have a Senior luncheon, and every other day they have a food bank. These are just two of the many services they have for their community. Their motto is asset-based community development. Once we got a sense of what the Community Center does, we divided into two groups. One group stayed at the Center and helped prepare the lunch for the Senior luncheon. The other group went to the New Horizons (a thrift store owned by the Welcome Inn) to help organize the backroom.

The New Horizon group consisted of Brent, Megan, Ariel, Abby, and me. It was a four-minute walk to the store, and we got to see some of the other community centers that Hamilton had to offer. Amanda is the manager of the store, and she gave us a tour of the shop and explained why the community center owned a shop. The main point of the store is not to make a profit, but to allow people to develop skills that they can use in the real world. In addition, it also gives people a place to shop for a pretty reasonable price. Books are $0.50, clothes were about $1-$3, and toys were not priced, they believe that people should not pay much for toys. Abby, Ariel, and I started cleaning out some of the holiday boxes in the back, and while Brent and Megan set up Saint Patrick's day display.

At noon we headed back to the Welcome Inn Community Center. We had a great lunch with some seniors in the community. I had a great opportunity to talk to a woman about what the future holds for the community. In the past few years, a lot of upper-class people started moving from Toronto to Hamilton, causing the housing market to go up. She explains how this made a massive impact on their impoverished community by limiting their affordable housing. They are doing their best to fight off these changes, and she hopes for the best, the community is sticking together through the changes.

After lunch, we headed back to the thrift store to finish up going through the seasonal boxes and talk to Amanda a bit more before we left. After finishing up, we headed back to the Sherman house. None of the core members were back from their day program, so the majority of the group decided to take a quick power nap. When the core members got back from their programs we all hung out in the family room. Two core members showed us the scrapbooks of their life; it was amazing to see photos of them when they were younger. We played some catch with a big ball before heading over to our dinner homes.

Carrie and I ate dinner at the Laddies home. It is three women who live more independently than most of the other L'arche homes. They have an apartment that is attached to the one L'arche home. We caught up with each other before sitting down to dinner; we had pasta with veggies. It was outstanding! After dinner, we wanted to watch the movie Frozen II. However, their DVD player broke, so we asked the conjoining L'arche home if they wanted to watch it all together in their family room. They agreed, and we combined houses for a little movie night. I have never seen Frozen II before, and it was way more than I was expecting. After the movie, we headed back to the Sherman house for reflection and to get ready for bed.

Today we ventured to Toronto for the Sol Express program, where they focus on auditory integration.
We got to know each other through name games, dance breaks, and theatre exercises. At the end of the afternoon, we did tableaus, which are still picture scenes of actions and stories. My personal favorite was the bad breakup tableau. One of the members acted as the cellphone that was thrown onto the floor after being dumped. The mini skits we did have a chance to be performed at Fringe Fest this summer! Naomi's favorite Disney princess just so happened to be Ariel. During one of our games she had me act as a mermaid to get to another chair. I committed to the act for her and gave my best mermaid impression.

After Sol Express, we traveled to Greektown and explored during our free time. Being the Americans that we are, we ended up at a Starbucks. It had this cute little sticky-note drawing display and I couldn't leave without leaving a piece of Gannon behind! Megan also found her ketchup chips that she has been raving about and bought them in bulk. We shared some during our reflection later in the day. It sounds gross, and as someone who does not prefer ketchup, I have to say they were pretty delicious.
We then headed back to L'Arche Toronto for Taize Worship. During worship they had a segment where we had a communal prayer and shared with everyone who to keep in our thoughts and prayers during this week. We then lit candles to represent these prayers. Some of the songs we sang were in Latin! It was the most beautiful thing to be able to witness and hear.
Megan and I headed to the Gamble House where we were welcomed with a handmade card made by the members! They immediately made us feel comfortable in their beautiful home. We discussed the differences between the U.S. and Canada and our 12 passenger van, which Stephen was very intrigued about. It's also safe to say that the members would rather go to Florida than Erie. Before we left, Janet gave us a house tour! In the house, there was a picture frame that had the quote "enjoy the little things." I feel as we often forget this and in the L'Arche community they live this daily. It was a nice reminder and way to end our day.

It was Gannon L'Arche ABST's 1st day in Hamilton, ON!

The congregation was very pleasant and the priest had a lovely Canadian accent! His homily on resisting temptation was very pertinent due to the beginning of the Lent season!

After this, the whole group reconvened at the Sherman House before traveling to the first ever Tim Horton's! David and a member from the Holton House, Mary, joined us. We all ate on the second floor of this massive coffee shop and got to tour the mini museum located upstairs. It was quite a learning curve when we found out that a large coffee here is equivalent to our medium in the US and the medium is equivalent to a small!

Once we finished up our coffee and lunch, we all headed to our assigned L'Arche homes. We spent the afternoon in each house getting to know the core members and assistants. We also had our dinner in these homes before coming back to the Sherman house for reflection.

Personally, Megan Loibl and I spent the afternoon in the Holton house getting to know the four members there (Ross, Mary, Ron, and Stephen). Ross was very outgoing and welcomed myself and Megan with a hand written note. He also insisted on treating us to a trip to Gage Park ( which has a lovely greenhouse in the center of it) and Tim Horton's coffee! Mary just celebrated her 77th birthday and shared her obsession with Elvis Presley with us. She also accompanied us to Gage Park. Ron stayed more to himself but gave the before-dinner prayer. Lastly, Stephen was mostly non-verbal but loved to give "props" which is an exaggerated fist bump! We had spaghetti with salad for dinner before gathering to hear about the high and lows of the core members. Ross said his high for the week was going to Gage Park with us! He says he is very excited to take us to the library on Tuesday.

Tomorrow, we are venturing to Toronto to visit Sol Express. We are all very much looking forward to it!

After a fun-filled drive from Gannon, we arrived safely in Hamilton, Ontario this afternoon! We were instantly greeted by the assistants and five core members of the Sherman House, including David, Bev, Doris, Alice, and Richard. We were so grateful to be greeted with such kindness and enthusiasm! After a dinner of pizza, David quickly introduced us to his love of the Batman television series and we spent the evening spending time together. We concluded our night with a group reflection, taking time to focus on the ways we would like to both grow and serve, with open hearts and minds, throughout our week with the L'Arche community. We are excited to continue sharing our experiences and group members' perspectives with you in the coming days!
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Although the week is done, the memories, the laughs, and the smiles will still carry on in our hearts. This past week has been an incredible experience for the group and I, one we sure will not forget. It seems like yesterday we had arrived at the Sherman house, bags in hand eager to meet the core members and assistants and now we are all back at Gannon (sad face). We are not sad that it is over, but we are happy that it happened. All the people we met really showed us love, kindness and compassion to a bunch of random college students. They took us into their homes, opened their hearts to us and we opened our hearts to them.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">From Hamilton to Toronto to Stratford, we found amazing people every where we went. We got to hangout in many different day programs, meet people with all sorts of backgrounds and stories and find meaning in the simplest things. Who knew the Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash would still be so popular today (inside joke) or that saying "I farted" over and over could bring so much laughter and joy? My very limited guitar playing skills came in very handy, I picked up a few signs in sign language, and even learned how to knit, my mom was so proud.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">L'Arche has taught all of us many different lessons. Some learned patience, some learned to see love in all the people around us, while some learned to enjoy the moments. These are just a few of the many lessons we have learned throughout the trip. But why have me tell you when you can read it from the group members themselves!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">L’Arche provided me with the opportunity to meet some of the most incredible people. The experiences I had in Ontario will be carried with me when I begin to work as an Occupational Therapy.

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Throughout this trip, I was very blessed to be welcomed into such a loving, caring community. This was really the first time I have ever hung out with people with intellectual disabilities, and it will definitely not be my last. I have just learned so much about the importance of presence and the simplicity of just being authentic and open to each other. An open mindset goes such a long way, and it shines so brightly in all the members of L’Arche. I am so fortunate that I became a part of this community, and it really was something that I was missing in my life. I really valued the conversations (and sometimes lack of conversations) I have with each member of L’Arche. Even silence can mean so much. It really amazes me at how open and genuine each L’Arche member was, and it was so inspiring to see that their disabilities did not limit such a beautiful way of life.

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In fact, I feel that their disabilities are a gift rather than something that limits them. They live with their hearts on their sleeves and that is something that I have always been afraid to do. They love freely. They dance freely. They express their emotions freely. Sometimes we live in a world where it seems that only success and achievement define who we are, and we have to hide the “ugly.” We are always trying to prove ourselves or to give more and more of ourselves to the world. It just seems that we will never be enough. And as important as it is to work hard and to achieve our goals, there is something very wonderful in realizing that we ARE enough. It’s okay to just live and appreciate what we are now. We don’t have to let our insecurities and limitations define us because we are so much more than just that. Through my time here, I have made friendships with a movie connoisseur, a bubbly socialite, and a dancing machine.

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I have heard laughter, and I have also heard screams. I have seen happiness, anger, and sadness, and every aspect was so important. It’s so human. Instead of hiding away our fears, insecurities, and everything that limits us, we can acknowledge each other and live together. We can laugh and cry together. We can just “be.” And just “being” there with my fellow ABST group and all the L’Arche assistants and members… just appreciating all the different gifts we bring to the world.. just acknowledging and expressing our love.. just meeting each other in the middle.. just supporting each other through different stages of our lives.. that is what I have experienced in their community and it is something that I will never forget. Love is a complex subject but it is not hard. It is through the little things where love is shared.

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And although I might get distracted with life’s curveballs, I know that I will always be able to come back to a place of love that is L’Arche. Thank you for showing/sharing with me this love and always remember to stay gold.

<span style="color: #3b3b3b; font-family: "segoeui" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This picture shows many sides of Ross. We brought the coke to dinner because he wanted to be like Mary, his housemate, the night before. He greatly enjoyed treating people to Tim Horton's so he could buy himself another coke. Building the tower showed his silly side as we tried to build it higher. Lauren and I enjoyed sharing dinner with Ross and all the Holton House friends.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Before going on this trip I've heard many great things about L'Arche and the amazing experience I will have once I'm there. I didn't really understand what everyone was telling me about L'Arche and didn't fully get how it would be a life changing experience for me. However, once I got there I understood right away what everyone was talking about. It was such an incredible experience that I will never forget. Is an experience I wish everyone would experience at least once in their life because it was such a marvelous experience. Is hard to explain my whole experience with L'Arche that is better for someone to just experience it themselves. Because is hard to explain all the emotions that I felt and the things I saw there. I didn't understand it in the beginning until I actually went there myself. Even though everyone can't experience L'Arche I will share my experience and the gifts and lesson I was taught to others hoping that they want to experience it too someday.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> When I arrived there I was welcomed with open arms and just felt the love from every single person there. I was able to learn more about myself and build relationship with not only the people at L'Arche but my group members as well. It was a nice way to remind myself that I should make time for myself and the people around me instead of rushing ahead towards my future all the time. I should be present in the moment and just enjoy myself and build stronger relationship with everyone around me. This is a trip I will never forget and I will use all the gifts and lesson that was given to me and use it everyday. Thank you L'Arche and my group members for all you have shown and taught me throughout this trip. Hopefully someday I can go back there or even go to other L'Arche communities to meet new people and make more wonderful relationships.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To read everyone's stories moves my heart; to see how many lives were impacted and to the degree in which they were impacted is truly incredible. The imense love, compassion and positive energy that we found on this trip was incomprehensible. I leave with my heart full, smiling, remembering all of the good times and the beautiful memories.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It is important not to forget what we learned here. It is so easy to get caught in the stream of life as school work will pile up, clubs and organizations will meet up again, all your crazy friends will come back and it can be easy to push aside everything we learned. I challenge not only myself, but my group and to whom ever reads this: everyday, take the time to see the beauty and love around you. Stop what you're doing and just be present. Take that time to see how blessed are are in this world and all of the love and good that is around us.

To start off our day Claire, Sydney, and Avery made everyone an amazing breakfast. Then afterward Heather, the spiritual coordinator for L'Arche Hamilton, came for closing reflection and had great conversations about our experiences here. We shared about the different core members that gave us a gift or taught us a lesson about life that we will remember and carry with us. We discussed some challenges that we faced in the beginning and how we have learned and grow from them. It was a great closing reflection seeing how much everyone has grown and really enjoyed themselves on this trip. It is one that none of us will forget and it will stay close to our hearts forever.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> After the closing reflection with Heather we went to the 541 Eatery and Exchange. 541 Eatery and Exchange is a a non-profit café where you can pay-it-forward by turning dollars into buttons. A button equals a dollar and anyone can use up to 5 buttons from the jar each day. Not only does this help feed those who need help paying, but it also nurtures the community there. When entering in the café even though it was small it felt cozy and at home. We had a wonderful lunch there and the service was great. This place was very lively and full of energy that we had a great time. We were just able to sit down and relax and really get to know one another.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> After lunch we headed to the day program to get some souvenirs for home. Everything that we bought were made by the core members at the day program so these souvenirs have some sentimental value to us all. After our little shopping spree we first went to see Tiffany Falls and it was amazing to see. It was a little rough getting to the falls with some parts of the trail being icy, but we were able to go around it safely and made it the falls. It was such a beautiful site even though it was frozen, however the water was still flowing in the back of the ice block. We really bonded and laughed a lot during this part of the day with us struggling to avoid the huge ice patch and falling down. The majority of us did fall in some areas but we had some laughs about it and it was nice and relaxing. Then after Tiffany Falls we went to Webster's Falls and it was stunning as well. The trail for this was better and the waterfall wasn't all frozen. So, it was great seeing the water flowing down during the winter season. We just walked around the area and took many pictures together throughout our time at both of the falls. It was such a nice and fun activity to do together on our last day.
Later this evening we drove back to Sherman House and prepare ourselves to head over to our houses for our last dinner. We laughed, played, joked, and had many great last conversations with the core members and assistants. The connections we made is something we will take with us going forward. We will truly miss everyone here and hopefully someday we can come back and visit again. We made our last night really last and even though we are leaving we are taking a part of each of them with us. Our journey does not have to end here and we all have received<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> a gift here that we will definitely<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> use in the future. Hope the world is ready for us to spread this wonderful gift we each have! See you all soon!!

Today our group traveled to the town of Stratford and can I just say, Stratford is an incredibly cute and small town. (I may or may not be planning a mini vacation here already.) Also as a fun fact, it is the town that Justin Bieber grew up in and visits frequently. We were able to participate in another Day Program, and this was probably one of the best days I, personally, have had so far. When we entered, only one or two core members were there, but more came to join us as the day went on. Shawn, one of the core members, told us about his background with L'Arche and how he got to where he is now. It was interesting to hear his personal story and the history of that L'Arche community. Today was full of many different activities that ranged from stamping and drawing on a piece of paper to baking banana and chocolate cookies to building a wardrobe for a local L'Arche home. Overall, I really valued the time I got to spend in Stratford.

Even though we may not have spend the entire day there, the value of my day only continued to grow. We went and joined our houses for dinner, but afterwards we all spent time watching "Mother's Day" and talking. As we sat there, Brian just wanted someone to sit down and knit with him. To give you a little bit of a background, my grandmother taught me how to knit when I was seven. Since then, I have made scarfs, blankets, and I am currently working on baby hats to donate to the local hospital. When Brian asked Mike to sit down and knit with him, I told Mike that I could teach him. After a few lessons, Mike got the hang of it. He took his knitting needles and sat with his legs crossed while facing Brian. As he was knitting, Brian was helping Mike. Just watching the two work together and listening to Brian laugh brought an immediate smile to anyone watching. I have spent some time with Brian, but I have not seen him this happy all week. Entering this trip, I did not think that a skill I have had for years would bring so much happiness to someone; I did not think that I would be teaching others how to knit. This trip has made me realize how much I could not only teach, but also be taught. I have learned quite a bit of Sign Language and plan on continuing this education in the future.

In my opinion, this has been one of the best days so far. It has taught me that simple things can create happiness in others. I was glad to share my knowledge of knitting, and I even have the blister to prove it. Our trip is coming to an end and I may not know what lies ahead, but I am prepared to take these lessons I have learned home with me to share with others.

See everyone soon!

Today, Ash Wednesday, is all about simplicity and remembering to emphasize prayer, fasting, and alms-giving. We experienced many special moments tonight during our prayer service with Father George and were able to spend the evening with all of the core members.

Today was a special day for me personally. My family is not Catholic, so I've never experienced an Ash Wednesday celebration. Having the opportunity to do so with such a special group of people was awesome. I sat next to Beverly (pictured above) which made my experience even more special. She's been very reserved the whole time we've been here, but last night and tonight she really opened up and talked to us. She giggled and smiled all night long. While we were singing worship songs, she grabbed my hand and kept squeezing tighter and tighter and held on for what seemed like an eternity. I was so happy that she was finally comfortable and it really made me appreciate the little things in life.

Hi everybody!

This morning we drove to L'Arche Toronto where we went to Sol Express Music Program. When we arrived, we were greeted by the lovely members and welcomed into their group. We began with many name games and were able to communicate our feelings through a sign language game. After a few games, Mike led a guitar playing session where we all sat around and sketched Mike and how the music made us feel. My partner for the sketching session was Kathleen and let me just say her picture was so much better than mine (Picture 4).

After our drawing session, we ate lunch and I had the privilege to sit with Lola (Picture 3). When we arrived in the morning, Lola sat with her headphones in and we were told that she would just be listening and joining in when she felt comfy. At lunch, Lola realized we had the same type of juice box and she began talking to me. After the most heartfelt conversation, Lola said to me as she laid her head on my shoulder "I really like you". For the rest of the day my heart was full of such great love.

Once lunch ended, we went on to work through a shape art exercise and really got to experience the views of others. The shape exercise led us into a music collaboration with the entire group which allowed us to conclude our day at L'Arche Toronto!

Stay posted for Lauren's post about our evening!!!

Warmest regards,

Hello all, Lauren here! Happy Mardi Gras!

Today started out by cooking 300 pancakes in one of the L'Arche homes. Let me tell ya, 300 pancakes made a heck of a mess, but it was super fun. Mike played some good music and my friend Ross and I made a great pancake cooking team. Though his pancakes were more rectangular than circular, which he called his "foot-longs", and they were delicious! Once we finished all the cooking, we headed to a local church where all of the L'Arche homes came together to celebrate Mardi Gras. There was lots of food, dancing, singing, and silly photos! Two core members sang rockin' solos, and we even got some rather shy people to bust a move on the dance floor.

After cleaning up from the celebration, it was time for dinner at our respective houses. Celene and I went to the Holton house to visit our friends and we had a delicious meal together! Ross even took us out for a night on the town after diner. We got to experience Hamilton's downtown and their awesome mall. He took us to his favorite place, the library, and he picked out movies and CD's for himself and a few books for his friend back at the house. After our trip to the library, he treated us to Tim Horton's, and he was so excited! Since we took him to Tim Horton's earlier in the week, he said it was "his turn to repay the favor," which was very kind.

Overall, today was a great day! We all enjoyed the celebration and the time with our families in our different L'Arche houses. The opportunities and gifts that this trip has given us are more than I can describe, and I cant wait to see what the rest of the week has in store for us!

'Ello Everybody- Lily here!

Today Claire and Avery made some very delicious scrambled eggs for this morning's breakfast! Delish! After eating such a delicious breakfast, we got ready to join our friend David, a fellow movie connoisseur and nickname master, at his day program.

And off we went through the cold yet exciting Canadian air! When we made it to the L'Arche office, we got to hang out with all of the awesome and amazing friends that we met through each of our adventures in each of the different L'Arche Houses. It was just so thrilling to see all of them and get to join them in their day activities! We also got to meet many of the wonderful assistants that help out and hear their stories. We finally got to meet Karen, the director for L'Arche Hamilton, and learned about the many wonderful things that go into a L'Arche community.

Throughout the day, we got to help decorate mason jars for Mardi Gras. There were sparkles and beads and fun. There was just so much creativity bustling in that room. Ashley, the music therapist, also came by today, and we got to sing and dance with our L'Arche friends. Some of our L'Arche friends were just killing it on the dance floor. They were just livin' it up and letting it go! WHOOOO! What a time to be alive! David even gave us a riveting solo of "Ring of Fire."

Also, we can't forget an excited exclamation of "BINGO" from Marcia, a enthusiastic L'Arche BINGO volunteer, in the middle of the dance session. Beautiful.

Every wall was also filled with so many paintings and pictures from each L'Arche member. It was so awesome to see such a celebration of all the hard work and creativity of L'Arche. It's just so wonderful that we got to be included and welcomed in such an amazing place.

Today, we laughed. We created. We danced. We talked. We built friendships. And most of all, we made memories to last a lifetime today.

And when you open yourself up, you're opening yourself up to friendship. And friendship can change your life in positive, wholesome ways.

Hi there- Avery here!

Today at L'Arche we split into four groups of two and visited different homes for lunch and dinner. We also got to visit the original Tim Horton's with a group of the core members.

For me, today warmed my heart and I will always remember it. I met an amazing group of people who I automatically felt at home with. Whether we were coloring, jamming to karaoke songs, or just sitting at the dinner table, we were constantly having great conversations and laughing. I am so excited to continue to form relationships throughout the week and make some meaningful memories.

We finished off the night by finishing a big cat puzzle (pictured above!!) and having deep reflections. I am beyond happy to be here and get to know some awesome people.

Since arriving safely in Ontario, we have settled into the Sherman House! After jamming out to great music on the drive here, we are happy to be spending time getting to know the core members in the Sherman House. Since traveling went so well, we were left with plenty of downtime today to play games, eat pizza, and watch movies with the members before having a great group discussion.

With the success of today, we prepare for the rest of the week ahead.

With warmest regards from the chilly living in Canada,

So many of us spent our time these past couple weeks cramming in copious amounts of information just to regurgitate onto a 55 min or less exam. Seems kind of pointless when you think about it that way.

Nonetheless, exams are over, classes are out, and we depart for our ABST tomorrow. Once the monster of mid-term week is over, there is this huge sense of relief taken off of us and a new found excitement that fills our body. Everyone is about to embark on this new journey tomorrow and I think there is a lot of excited energy around but also some fear.

Maybe it is fear of the unknown, maybe it is a fear of traveling away from home, or maybe it is a fear of pushing your comfort zone. I don't think this "fear" that some of us feel is bad. It pumps that adrenaline through our body and prepares us for something to happen. Something great.

Personally, I have never been to L'Arche so I have some fears, some nervous energy, but this isn't scaring me, it is making me feel more alive and pumped up to embark on this journey tomorrow with this amazing group of students.

I can't wait to see what is in store for this upcoming week and we will be sure to keep all of you updated!

Much Love, Michael RizzoL'Arche Ontario ABSThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04955365721864668519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428078648981038681.post-34086293045246065022019-01-27T16:19:00.002-08:002019-01-27T16:30:12.745-08:00Meet the Team! <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

Well, we had a good thing going with our daily cute coffee sign quotes up until today. However, it is important to mention that we tried the donuts discussed in this sign and certainly weren't disappointed.

Here we are. Our last night in Hamilton. How quickly we went from having our L'Arche journey ahead of us to look forward to, to now having it transition into a beautiful memory. Today was a day of reflection, gratefulness, and rest.

We began the day with a closing reflection at the main office with our gracious host coordinator. We got to share and learn from her many experiences throughout the years and were sent off with a beautiful blessing from two special Core Members.

Afterwards, we took off for Cafe 541 to grab some lunch together. The unique part about Cafe 541 is that you have the opportunity to purchase 'buttons' that have a $1 value. The buttons are placed in a jar and can be used to purchase food by anyone who needs them. After lunch we got to have some free time to explore the city of Hamilton. We had a nice time visiting various shops and markets and enjoyed spending time together as a group!

In the evening, we went our separate ways to have dinner one last time with our house communities and to say some tough goodbyes to the Core Members and Assistants that have greatly impacted our life in the time span of just 1 week. These faces have forever changed us <3
Each one of "The Gannon Girls" agrees that this week has been nothing short of life-changing. We are all so grateful for the experience and will truly carry the memories from this week and the hearts of our new friends with us forever.

Some of the things we've learned on our L'Arche Ontario journey:

"Push yourselves to be uncomfortable, because the end result will be beautiful." - Favour

How to knit (thanks Brian!)

"The value of all types of communication; art, performance, sign language, body language, facial expressions." - Mary Margaret

That ketchup chips are stellar.

How to be more comfortable with silence.

"To find true community is rare, but when you find it, cherish it." - Meghan

Various words in French from reading different food products and road signs

Picking your split ends is bad. (ahem, in the words of a dear friend: "Knock it off, M&M")

"The importance of understanding the dignity of each human being. Life is a delicate, beautiful thing that should be cherished." - Lydia

How to communicate certain words/phrases in sign language: 'bathroom', 'thank you', 'beautiful', 'coffee', and 'popcorn'; to name a few.

That Lydia is extremely prone to dropping/spilling things.

The difference in walking WITH someone and doing things FOR them.

All the words to "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan

Simply put: "We learned how to encounter another human being with kindness, authenticity, and respect. We learned how to truly see God in them." - Alli

Thank you for reading along with our blog! We'll be sure to check in one last time when we return to Erie tomorrow afternoon!
Lastly, and the entry you’ve all been waiting for, welcome to the blog by Favour. This morning we started off our day by once again, getting Vintage coffee. Before this ABST trip, I never had a taste for coffee, and now due to the early mornings, busy schedule, and necessary afternoon boosts of energy, I NEED IT. I went with my typical Frappuccino but spiced up my order with an Apple Fritter. Considering we went to the coffee shop every morning this trip, it was no surprise that we were named the barista’s favorite “Pennsylvania girls”, probably because of all the business we brought to them this week and Alli’s persistence.

After coffee, we loaded the van and headed to L’Arche Daybreak, hoping to avoid the morning Toronto traffic. We made it in little time to L’Arche Daybreak thanks to the HOV lane. This was a very special place being that L’Arche Daybreak is the first L’Arche branch founded in America and the second community founded in the world. We were first introduced to Toni; the Day Break administrator. Next year L’Arche Daybreak will be celebrating their 50th anniversary. Every annual event or celebration usually calls for other L’Arche communities reaching out and showing their support. She told us about the history of L’Arche, what it takes to create a new community, and about the first members of L’Arche, especially one of the original core members, who we had the fortune of meeting today at “The Club”. Father George and and this CM go way back, and it was beautiful to see them interact while knowing the history behind their relationship. We were then all split up into the 3 individual houses within Daybreak, I went to the house that holds the paper, wax, and clay rooms. Sister Carmen and I helped pack blue and white hombre candles ordered for a wedding, with the assistance of a core member. The core member went on to tell us about how she loves using the pottery wheel to make mugs and plates and wishes to someday make a vase or mug with a handle. Another core member shared with us his huge interest in cars, writing, and drawing. It was beautiful seeing how passionate he was and how he really liked expressing his interests. We concluded the day with a prayer led by Father George and Toni, discussing our best moments of the day, and pondering the past and future of L’Arche. Afterwards, we had dinner at Joe’s accompanied by father George. This specific Joe’s is run by people who serve the core members weekly and have a very close relationship with L’Arche. The Gang filed into the Mystery Machine (Scooby Doo reference) and headed back to L’Arche Hamilton.

After a few wrong turns, exits, and a snow storm coming in, we made it home. We were greeted by many core members and B+ Arnold Schwarzenegger and Batman Impressions. This week has been amazing. We have met amazing core members, amazing assistants, and amazing individuals who give their time to volunteer within this family. L’Arche is an experience I will never forget, and I can honestly say, changed me forever.

Hi there, Alli here! Happy Wednesday from your favorite Hamilton Crew. At this point in the week, we seem to have been lovingly nicknamed "The Gannon Girls" by our friends in the L'Arche homes.

We spent our day at the L'Arche Hamilton Day Program, just a short walk from our home. The Day Program facility has a craft room, kitchen, and seating area. After getting a tour of the facility, Core Members began to arrive for the day. We were happy to see many new faces, as well as faces of those we've come to know and love. We helped Core Members with various craft activities such as candle making and coloring. Sister Carmen even taught a group how to make knotted rosary bracelets! The staff made a delicious pasta lunch for everyone as part of their Community Lunch that takes place each month. Many of the Core Members were most excited for the Music Therapy session that takes place at the end of each Wednesday. We were lucky to witness some phenomenal singing and performing skills!

After a short break this afternoon, we split off to our respective houses for dinner. This has personally been one of the most life-giving experiences thus far - not only are we welcomed into the separate homes, but the L'Arche Assistants cook beautiful meals to share and invite us into prayer, mealtime, and community with them each night. They answer all of our questions and have helped us learn so much in our short visits. The Core Members have seamlessly integrated us into their evening activities, like watching the Olympics, learning to knit, singing along to Ed Sheeran songs, and birthday celebrations.

Tonight, we were blessed to join the weekly prayer service where many Core Members and Assistants from the various L'Arche Hamilton homes come together in a prayer space to praise God with each other. During the service, Fr. George led a meditation that helped us to all consider how much we are loved by God for the unique and gifted individuals we are. There was an opportunity for us all to share our prayer intentions to be lifted up by the entire group. During this time, we came together to pray as one. What a blessing it was to hear the prayers from the hearts of those we are coming to know this week. I was especially struck by one Core Member when he began using sign language to express his prayers. An Assistant from the house was gracious enough to articulate his prayers aloud for us all to hear. We also were lucky to witness the community blessing upon an Assistant on her last day of work with L'Arche. There was such beauty and love in this room tonight, and I know we will all cherish the memory of being welcomed in this space for years to come. To share a piece of this beauty, I wanted to give you the lyrics to one of the songs we sang together, by Shaina Noll:

How could anyone ever tell you

You were anything less than beautiful?

How could anyone ever tell you

You were less than whole?

How could anyone fail to notice

That your loving is a miracle?

How deeply you're connected

To my soul.

Thank you for reading along our Wednesday journey, and be sure to check back with us to hear about our last two days with L'Arche Hamilton!

Our L'Arche journey continued this fine Tuesday with a lovely trip to visit the community of Toronto (and coffee of course)!

We were privileged to spend the day with the Sol Express, a day program offered to Core Members both living in and outside of the L'Arche homes. Sol Express is a program that cultivates creative expression as a means to interact with the world and build community, and the groups on Mondays and Tuesdays focuses on acting. We were impressed with their collective accomplishments, and they told us about how they perform at the Toronto Fringe Festival every July, and were beginning preparations for the upcoming play season. Our time at Sol Express was filled with a variety of activities, including an introduction activity in which we introduced a new friend to the group after briefly interviewing each other and some improv games. Overall, we greatly enjoyed getting to know the participants at Sol Express, and encountering them in such a unique way through their creativity and artistry.
Sr. Carmen even met a fellow Austrian!

To conclude our day program experience, we were joined by none other than the famous Fr. George, who lead us in a beautiful recap and reflection of our day, along with some of our community partners from Toronto. We then split off into groups and ate dinner in three of the different L'Arche Toronto homes. Though it should no longer surprise us, we continue to be incredibly moved by the profound welcoming and hospitality we receive from the Core Members and Assistants. Many of us were greeted by welcoming signs created by the CMs before even walking through the door! When we finally had to depart for Hamilton, we left knowing we were leaving friends.

One theme we entered into a bit more deeply today than before was that of the hardships and wounds that persons with disabilities often have from mistreatment by society, both previous and current, and especially through institutions. This topic came up first at Sol Express, as they are researching for their play about the institutions, and also came up in conversations throughout the evening. We reflected on how, though the Core Members we encounter are often so joyful and bring so much life to those around them, many of them carry a lot of suffering as well. This realization, rather than putting a damper on our experiences, helped us to more fully appreciate the depths of L'Arche and the complexity of humanity.

Tune in tomorrow to hear about our Hamiltonian friends at the day program! :)
We began our day with some coffee from a local shop around the corner. It well-prepared us for an exciting hands-on helping day. Our big project today was to help at a thrift shop which supports the Hamilton Welcome Inn, which is a local community center. The center supports the community especially those people with low income. A few weeks ago the thrift shop was taken over by a new manager whose goal it is to get the shop organized better. And so we helped to clean up their workshop where the volunteers sort all their donations. After setting up a nice break corner for the many volunteers who come to the shop to help each week, we got to help sorting cables, hangers, books and .... Christmas donations....
For us as a group it was so nice to accomplish this work together. We definitely could feel, that working together at a project can truly move mountains! And it was beautiful to see how happy the people are who give so much of their precious time to help to build up the local Hamilton community.

For dinner we went again to the different houses of L'Arche Hamilton. We continued building community with the members and had heart warming experiences. In one house we were part of a birthday celebration for a 75 year-old core member, in another house we took part in the knitting session of a core member and another community got to knot bracelets after discovering it on the wrist of one of us. Definitely an enriching evening for all of us!

Our first full day in Ontario at L'Arche was eventful! We began the day with mass at St. Joseph's Parish, which has a special relationship with the L'Arche community here. In addition to the general proceedings of Mass, there were special musical guests from Estonia (a bass player, a pianist, and a trumpet).

After mass, we returned to the Sherman House (our home away from home) to relax before an adventure around Hamilton with the Sherman House. Our first stop on our adventure was Tim Horton's. (Little known fact: Hamilton is home to the very first Tim Horton's.) While at Tim Horton's, we met with other members of L'Arche homes around Hamilton and enjoyed a delicious meal (with the addition of Tim Bits and coffee of course).

Although it was somewhat chilly and a bit windy, we were able to take a nice walk along the water.

We then returned to the Sherman House before dinner. From there, we split off to different homes around Hamilton to eat dinner and visit with the Core members. ABST members visited the Holton House, Cornerstone House, and Charbonneau House for dinner. At each house, memories that will last a lifetime were created at this time with the Core members.

The group reconvened at the Sherman House after dinner for reflection, which focused on celebration and community in the context of L'Arche.

Tune in tomorrow to hear about our day!
